About

Chess, plus one axis

Most 4D chess you have heard of is a joke about politics. This is the real thing: a 4 × 4 × 2 × 2 hypercube, sixty-four squares, and the ordinary chess rules stated so that they apply to every axis the same way.

The variant grew out of a small open web page that showed the four boards and a rotating tesseract and let you play the computer. We loved it and wanted everything that goes around a game: opponents at any hour, clocks, ratings, puzzles, tournaments, a place to look back at your games. So we built the chess.com of 4D chess. Same rules as that page, so anything you learned there carries over.

It is free. You can play without an account, and an account only costs a username. Ratings are Glicko-2 per time class. The engine that powers computer games, puzzles and the analysis board searches the real 4D move tree; nothing is faked.

House rules

  • Be decent in chat. Reports go to a person.
  • No engines in rated games. There are only a few 4D engines in the world and ours is one of them; we can tell.
  • One account per person for rated play. Guests are welcome to play casual games forever.
